I am That Trendy Therapist.
When you think about therapy, you probably have some thoughts and images that automatically come to mind. Perhaps a dull, cold office with a couch and chair across from it, a woman peering at you over her oval glasses with a notebook slapped across her lap.
That might have been the old way of therapy, but this is now.
Our world is changing. We live in a fast-paced, image-obsessed, high pressure world where social media plays a role in just about everything. I understand this world. I am a part of it. I am a modern therapist. While I'm skilled in the traditional therapeutic modalities, I bring my own flair and spice to the table.
Therapy doesn’t have to be boring, it can actually be really cool.
Therapy, in my very biased but experienced opinion, is something anyone and everyone can benefit from. It isn’t something to be ashamed of. I actually think one should feel pride when letting friends and family know they’re seeing a therapist. Why? Because therapy takes guts. It’s tough work, but it’s the most rewarding work you can do. It’s work on the self. And many people never choose to do this work. So you’re at an advantage if you do.
I don’t look like your average therapist.
I’m attractive. There, I said it. Let’s also erase the stigma around saying we are attractive. (It’s not always a cocky thing, it can really be confidence, believe it or not). I look incredibly young. I also love fashion. My workdrobe is very important to me. So when I get new patients who haven’t already seen me on social media before (btw, insta is: @thattrendytherapist, obv) I get looks of surprise. They don’t expect to see someone like me sitting in the therapist chair. But why?
Therapy has no rules.
Let’s realize that therapy needs to modernize with the times. I’m moving with the wave, not against it. I understand first-hand the pressures of image and social media and the accomplishment-obsessed world we live in. I get the pressures of body image. (In fact, my own battle with Anorexia Nervosa in High School was what led me to become a therapist). I hear you. I understand you. And I want to help you.

Being yourself is going to make some people extremely uncomfortable. They’ll dislike you solely to feel better about themselves. There’s no need to feed or nurture negativity—Dismiss it. Remember, their insecurities are not yours to take on, the only thing that matters is your truth, stand tall in it.
